He was a singer and songwriter who recorded such songs as "Sixteen Tons", "Ballad of Davy Crockett", "In the Middle of an Island", "Mule Train", "That's All", "Cry of the Wild Goose", "Shotgun Boogie", "Ivy League", "First Born" and "Roving Gambler". A bit of trivia is that his album "Hymns" was on the U.S.A. Billboard Album charts for 350 consecutive weeks. As well, he appeared as himself on the television shows "The Tennessee Ernie Ford Hour", "The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show" and "Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge", among various guest appearances. He died of liver disease.
